As you may have guessed, I am a self-made man. The two books, with text, pictures, lay-out and, not least, print separation, have all been done by me.
In the same spirit, this web-page was drafted by my own hands, which was not easy to do for an old man, I can tell you!
I am eager to get your reaction to all this. So please, leave a comment on my work here, I will treasure it!
Gratulation zu all deinen Aktivitäten! Auch ich beschäftige mich mit den zeitgemäßen Kommunikationsmedien - allerdings nicht für mich selbst, sondern ehrenamtlich für ein mit dem Alternativen Nobelpreis ausgezeichnetes Projekt.

I am so happy to see that you "live your dream" - to produce such a beautiful book with lots of lovely pictures! I hope I could do something like this in my future - but it would take many years from now, if ever, I think! Congratulations to you from Ylva

Did I ever tell you that you are an extraordinarily original and special person and a very good friend?

Dear Emil, I have praised you many, many times for what you are writing and doing, but I have always tried to add a drop of acidity in the goblet in order to make people believe what I say. And, of course, because I had a feeling there should always be someone playing the role of slave on the triumphal chariot. Now I find it impossible to stick to this habit. So this time I offer just praise. But I am still waiting for your memoirs, and as you know I have suggested a title: Memoirs of a peripathetic European intellectual. But generally, please keep on the same way as usual.

Well you certainly did a good job on chapter 19. I enjoyed all the pictures and the story. Even though I have lived in the Bay Area since 1960 I have never been on the Berkely campus. This chapter has encouraged me to try to get over there this May.

Greetings, Emil
Yet another exquisite sampler of your work!
I am just mad over the fine resolution and the masterful Bokeh. I so wish I had the apparatus to capture that effect. I know you work those photos over pretty well on the computer too. Thanks so much for this chapter 7 – I can feel the damp coolness of that morning as if I were there. Stay well and thanks!

Full of energy and ideas dear Emil! My best regards and thank you for including me in your mailing list! I have my own photo collection from a one month California trip in 1990. If you ever come to Luxembourg I would love to share with you. Hope to see you sometime.

Hello Emil,
Thank you kindly for sending me this marvelous book “Fiat Lux!”. Let me first apologise for this late reply. I was planning to focus my reaction only on the pictures and get back to you earlier, but your writing caught my attention too and I enjoyed reading the whole book. It must have been a memorable experience for you to revisit those places after so much time, with no hurry and with the pleasure of practicing your hobby with your camera.
Regarding the pictures, I have to tell you that they were definitely up to my expectations. They all support the book title since their common denominator is luminosity, brightness and color, which in turn is aligned with the spirit of California, university, youth, etc. Title, pictures, subject matter and writing all reinforce each other and convey the same message.
You could have approached the project from a moody, nostalgic point of view, concentrating on the passage of time, with photos taken with misty weather, soft light and so on, but you didn´t. Actually, what struck me the most, from a technical point of view, was your abundant use of harsh sunlight (which I tend to avoid for the difficulty of dealing with its high contrast). In spite of that, it is obvious that you master the processing technique, since you are able to fit the entire tonal range on paper, keeping the details both in the highlights and in the deep shadows and using the paper reflectivity to its limits. Almost every picture is an example of that. I will follow your advice and suggestions you posted in photo.net and try to emulate them as much as I can.
Regarding the colours, which are vivid and don´t look like CMYK, I have a question though. Do you adjust clarity, vibrance or saturation in the RAW images?
Thank you again very much for the book and please let me know if you ever come to Madrid. I will happily treat you to lunch and we could chat.
